Medical judgement before treatment.
Hair loss can have a visible cosmetic impact, but it may also have underlying medical causes. At HairOptions Clinic in Bloubergstrand, Dr Stephanie Shaw Ferreira begins with assessment, explains the suitable options clearly and recommends treatment only when it adds genuine value.
- YOUR HAIR-LOSS PATHWAY
Start with a diagnosis, not a package.
A structured hair consultation considers your medical history, pattern of hair loss, scalp condition, hair calibre, existing follicular activity and the condition of the potential donor area.
Blood results may be reviewed, and further investigation or referral may be recommended where clinically indicated. This is particularly important when hair loss is sudden, diffuse, inflammatory or potentially linked to hormonal, nutritional or medical factors.
Depending on your diagnosis, your plan may include medical management, PRP, low-level laser therapy, Microdot SMP, hair transplantation, further investigation—or simply monitoring and time.

- HAIR RESTORATION OPTIONS
One goal. Different routes.
The best route depends on diagnosis, donor quality, hairstyle, the area being treated and your long-term plan.
- FUE transplant
- FUT transplant
- SMP
- PRP and laser
- Brow and beard
FOLLICULAR UNIT EXTRACTION
FUE hair transplant
During FUE, individual follicular units are removed from a suitable donor area and transplanted into areas of thinning or hair loss. The procedure avoids a linear strip incision and may be appropriate for patients who prefer shorter hairstyles.
- Hairline planning based on facial proportion and future hair loss
- Conservative management of the available donor area
- Performed under local anaesthetic in appropriate clinical conditions
- Small individual extraction marks rather than one linear donor scar
- Transplanted hair develops gradually, with maturation commonly continuing for approximately 12–18 months
FUE is not automatically the best option for every patient. Suitability and expected graft requirements must be assessed individually.
FOLLICULAR UNIT TRANSPLANTATION
FUT hair transplant
During FUT, a narrow strip of hair-bearing scalp is removed from the donor area and carefully separated into individual follicular units for transplantation. The donor area is closed surgically, leaving a linear scar designed to sit beneath the surrounding hair.
- May be considered when higher graft numbers are required
- Can help preserve parts of the donor area for future planning
- Requires appropriate surgical closure and wound care
- Normally best suited to patients who wear sufficient hair length over the donor area
The choice between FUE and FUT depends on donor characteristics, hairstyle, previous procedures, graft requirements and long-term planning. Neither technique is universally better.
NON-SURGICAL CAMOUFLAGE
Scalp Micropigmentation
Scalp micropigmentation places tiny pigment impressions into the scalp to create the visual effect of closely cropped follicles or reduce the contrast between the hair and visible scalp.
- May be suitable for selected women and men
- Can support a closely shaved appearance
- May reduce visible scalp contrast in areas of thinning
- Can sometimes help visually soften suitable transplant scars
- Usually requires more than one session and future maintenance
Hair-loss pattern, pigment colour, skin tone and the possibility of future hair loss must be considered before treatment begins.
SUPPORTING EXISTING FOLLICLES
PRP and low-level laser therapy
PRP and low-level laser therapy may form part of a broader clinical plan for thinning areas where follicles remain active. These treatments are not suitable for every form of hair loss.
- PRP key point: PRP uses a prepared concentration obtained from the patient’s own blood and is administered according to an individual treatment plan.
- Laser key point: Low-level laser therapy is a non-surgical supportive treatment intended to stimulate existing follicles.
- Planning key point: Both may be considered alongside medical management, scalp care or future restoration planning.
The expected benefit depends on the cause and stage of hair loss. No treatment can guarantee a specific amount of regrowth.
FACIAL HAIR RESTORATION
Eyebrow and beard transplants
Hair transplantation may be used to rebuild selected areas affected by thinning, scarring or genetic patchiness using suitable follicles from the patient’s own donor area.
- Eyebrow restoration requires careful control of hair angle and direction
- Beard design is planned around facial proportion and styling preference
- FUE donor harvesting may be used in suitable cases
- Possible medical causes should be assessed before surgery
The donor area, skin condition and desired density must support a safe and realistic treatment plan.

- COMMON QUESTIONS
Useful answers before you book.
A medical, hair-loss or aesthetic consultation with Dr Stephanie is R500. When an aesthetic treatment is performed during the same appointment, the consultation fee is waived.
FUE removes follicular units individually and leaves small extraction marks distributed through the donor area. FUT removes a narrow strip of hair-bearing scalp and leaves a fine linear scar. The appropriate method depends on donor characteristics, hairstyle, graft requirements, previous surgery and long-term planning.
Yes. Women may experience genetic thinning, diffuse shedding, traction-related loss, hormonal changes, nutritional deficiencies and other medical causes. A structured assessment is important before treatment or surgery is recommended.
Yes. Curl pattern, follicle angle, hair calibre, scalp condition and donor limitations are considered during assessment. The treatment or surgical approach must be planned according to the individual rather than hair type alone.
Early changes occur gradually. Shedding of transplanted hairs may occur initially, followed by progressive growth. Maturation commonly continues over approximately 12–18 months, although individual timelines vary.
Yes. An online consultation can be requested for initial discussion and planning. Some diagnoses, prescriptions and all procedure planning will still require an appropriate in-person assessment.
No. The purpose of the consultation is to understand your concern, assess suitability and explain the available options. Your next step may be treatment, further investigation, referral, monitoring—or no procedure at this stage.
